Ciwara kun headdress

Africa, Mali

Ciwara is my name. I was sculpted in Mali. I am not a mask; I am a headdress, held in place on the top of the head by a small wickerwork skullcap.

Do you recognize the shape of the scaly ant-eater, a creature that digs up earth with its powerful claws? This animal reminds us of working the land and of how the sun makes it productive. And can you recognize the horns of the antelope? They look like mil stalks growing, and symbolize energy and drive.

The Ciwara's task is to initiate a young man into the mysteries of agriculture. The dances take place both out in the fields and in the village. By performing them, the villagers pay homage to the union between the sun and the earth.
