Drum

North America

From the Great Plains of North America I come.

From where exactly is my secret! Drum am I.

I like the dull thud that my taut skin produces.

To us Indians of the Great Plains, the circle stands for the possibility of going from one world to another or getting in touch with supernatural forces. Look closely at the two worlds represented on this drum. The lower part depicts the world here below. The upper part depicts the cosmic world, with its morning and evening stars.

So who am I, here in the middle, lighting up the scene with my two red eyes? I am the rising sun, and you are captivated by my glowing look.

  • How many parts can you distinguish in this drum?

  • What colors are used for each part?

  • What does it call to mind?

  • How would you describe the characters?
